  Beijing put forward a 34% additional levy on all U.S. goods, hitting back after Trump announced a 10% minimum tariff on most U.S. imports, with significantly higher duties for dozens of countries including China.
  "This is the first very explicit escalation from China, they are not backing down, they are upping the game," said Bjarne Schieldrop, chief commodities analyst at SEB. He is expecting further retaliation from Trump.
  The accelerating tensions further drove fears that the tariffs could lead to a global trade war, weighing on economic growth and curbing demand for key commodities. The levies by the U.S. excluded energy, but the retaliatory move by China encompass all U.S. goods, as well as export curbs on some rare earths.
  The U.S. is a major energy exporter and sells oil and LNG to China, according to data from Kpler and the EIA.
  Wall Street benchmarks sold off heavily, with the Dow Jones set to reach a correction while the Nasdaq was on track to enter a bear market.
  Brent futures fell $5.29, or 7.5%, to $64.85 a barrel and U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures lost $5.57, or 8.3%, to $61.83 a barrel. The oil benchmarks were set for the lowest close since the middle of the pandemic in April 2021.
  
  Natural gas prices in Europe and Asia also took a tumble. European gas prices to plunged their lowest in over six months, with the Dutch front-month contract down 3.02 euros, or 7.7% at 36.45 euros per megawatt hour (MWh) or $11.78/mmBtu, LSEG data showed. Asian spot liquefied natural gas (LNG) prices also remained at their lowest level in nearly six months.
  SOYBEANS, GRAINS
  Soybean futures on the Chicago Board of Trade fell more than 2% on Friday which China’s tariffs on U.S. goods expected to bring trade in the oilseed between the countries to a halt. China is the largest buyer of U.S. soybeans. CBOT soybeans were down 2.3% at $9.88 a bushel at 1304 GMT after slumping to a more than three-month low of $9.84. Grain prices also fell with CBOT wheat down 1.9% at $5.26 a bushel while corn shed 1% to $4.52-3/4 a bushel.
  
  "China’s tariffs will stop soybean and grain sales to China. There will no sales of any U.S. grains or soybeans to China until this is resolved," one European trader said.
  Demand for U.S. agricultural products has already come under pressure from the trade war during Trump’s first term in 2018. Beijing raised duties last month on $21 billion worth of U.S. products in response to Washington’s earlier round of tariffs on Chinese goods.

  Brent futures fell 31 cents, or 0.4%, to $69.83 a barrel by 0157 GMT. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures were down 32 cents, or 0.5%, to $66.63.Brent was on course for its biggest weekly loss in percentage terms since the week ended October 14, and WTI since the week ended January 21.
  Adding to the bearish sentiment was a decision by the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries and their allies (OPEC+) to advance their plan for oil output increases, with the organisation now aiming to return 411,000 barrels per day to the market in May, up from 135,000 bpd as initially planned.
  "This brings forward the expected surplus that we see in the oil market this year. More OPEC+ supply should translate to more medium sour crude oil and a wider Brent-Dubai spread," analysts at ING said on Friday. "This spread has seen an unusual discount for much of the year."
  
  Both benchmarks started plunging lower since Trump’s news conference on Wednesday afternoon, which he called "Liberation Day" as he announced a 10% baseline tariff on all imports to the United States and higher duties on dozens of the country’s biggest trading partners.
  Imports of oil, gas and refined products were exempted from Trump’s sweeping new tariffs, but the policies could stoke inflation, slow economic growth and intensify trade disputes, weighing on oil prices.

Read more As U.S. President Donald Trump looks increasingly likely to shift away from the Biden-era acceleration of renewable energy deployment in favour of the expansion of the fossil fuel industry, oil executives are calling on the government to create greater market stability. The U.S. energy market has boomed in recent years, largely due to the introduction of former President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), which attracted high levels of green financing, and the increase of domestic oil and gas production. Favourable federal policies have allowed oil and gas majors to expand production to meet the high international demand while investing revenues in the development of renewable energy and clean tech. However, since Trump came into office in January, many energy companies have been left in limbo, uncertain of whether the government will continue to support the green ventures they have invested so heavily in and how future project costs will look.
  
  During Trump’s first month in office, he signed a flurry of executive orders signalling a renewed support for fossil fuel projects and a halt on the expansion of the green energy sector. This led several oil executives to call for greater stability in the country’s energy policy, following several years of heavy investment in green energy and clean tech.
  
  In March, the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas conducted a survey with oil executives from around 130 firms, in which they were promised anonymity, to understand their opinion on the new administration’s approach to energy. In the survey, one executive stated, “The administration’s chaos is a disaster for the commodity markets.” They added, “‘Drill, baby, drill’ is nothing short of a myth and populist rallying cry. Tariff policy is impossible for us to predict and doesn’t have a clear goal. We want more stability.”
  
  Several executives stressed that Trump’s tariffs on steel had increased costs, making it difficult to plan for projects. Another executive said, “Uncertainty around everything has sharply risen during the past quarter… Planning for new development is extremely difficult right now due to the uncertainty around steel-based products.”
  
  The responses from the anonymous survey were a stark contrast from those given publicly by executives during a conference in Houston earlier in the month. The oil executives attending the conference were generally enthusiastic about the change in administration and praised Trump for his approach to energy. Ryan Lance, the CEO of ConocoPhillips, said that the new Energy Secretary Chris Wright and the Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum “understand the business,” describing them as the best energy team the U.S. has seen in decades. Meanwhile, Patrick Pouyanné, the CEO of TotalEnergies, said he was “impressed by the quality of our counterparts”, and Mike Wirth from Chevron said the industry is “seeing some reality come back to the conversation.”
  
  Despite their publicly positive responses to Trump’s first moves regarding energy, the CEOs of Chevron and Conoco both said that U.S. oil production would likely plateau following the record-high output seen over the last two years. “Chasing growth for growth’s sake has not proven to be particularly successful for our industry,” Wirth said. “At some point, you’ve grown enough that you should start to move towards a plateau, and you should generate more free cash flow, rather than just more barrels,” he added.
  
  Oil prices fell from a peak of $78.6 a barrel in January to $70.5 a barrel in April. Peter Navarro, a senior White House aide, has said that reducing oil prices to $50 a barrel could help tackle inflation. However, such low prices would mean companies operating in the U.S. would lose money drilling new wells.
  
  When it comes to tariffs, there are concerns from several industries due to the uncertainty of which tariffs will be introduced when, to who, and how high. Trump has repeatedly threatened the introduction of tariffs across several industries and on multiple countries, but investors have been in wait-and-see mode when it comes to project development, due to the uncertainty over future costs. After several weeks of waiting, Trump introduced sweeping tariffs on 2nd April, declaring a national economic emergency and announcing tariffs of at least 10 percent across all countries, with rates going even higher for 60 countries deemed the “worst offenders.”
  
  The new tariffs will have a knock-on effect on the energy industry, not only on oil and gas but on project development across all energy sectors, as imported materials become more expensive. This was a fear for several energy executives and only time will tell how much the new tariffs will affect the industry. However, Trump’s recent policy moves are a far cry from the stability requested by many energy executives when he came to office, which will likely prompt greater critique of the new administration’s approach to energy and industry. Oil prices took a dive after the announcement, predictions of a grim economic future multiplied, and countries around the world vowed to retaliate. It’s a game of tariffs with a twist: energy imports were exempted from the tariffs.
  
  On Wednesday afternoon, President Trump announced a 10% additional levy on most goods that enter the United States. For some trade partners, however, the levies were much higher. China got an additional import tariff of 34%, as threatened by Trump earlier, to be added to a 20% import tariff he slapped on Chinese-made products earlier in the year. India got hit with a 26% import tariff, ally and all. And the European Union is threatening retaliation for the 20% tariff rate Trump picked for it.
  
  “China firmly opposes this and will take countermeasures to safeguard its own rights and interests,” the Chinese ministry of commerce said after the announcement of the new tariffs. This is hardly a surprise, since China reacted in the same way when Trump announced his first tariffs against it and was quick enough to react by announcing its own retaliatory tariffs, notably on U.S. energy imports. Others may do the same—boosting other energy suppliers.
  
  Many freshly tariffed governments are threatening to retaliate, and it is this threat, along with the tariffs themselves, that appears to have shaken stock and commodity markets this week while the dust settles. The European Union has called the tariffs “illegal”, with European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen saying earlier today that “We are already finalising a first package of countermeasures in response to tariffs on steel. And we are now preparing for further countermeasures, to protect our interests and our businesses if negotiations fail.”
  
  Trump has argued that the new tariffs aim to level the playing field for U.S.-made products sold abroad, where they have to compete with tariff-protected local products—with these local tariffs sometimes much higher than the maximum Trump rate. The U.S. tariffs have been dubbed reciprocal, therefore, with proponents saying Trump is doing to other exporters the same that other importers have been doing to U.S. products.
  
  There don’t seem to be many proponents of the new tariffs out there, however. India, which is notorious for its substantial import tariffs, got a Trump rate of 26% on many of its exports, even after it signaled it was prepared to reduce its own tariff rates on U.S. imports worth $23 billion to avoid the new levies. It even followed these words with actions, actually cutting import duties on some U.S. products. It didn’t help. Neither did it help Israel when it removed all import tariffs on U.S. goods. Israel got slapped with a 17% tariff.
  
  The most pessimistic warnings from analysts and other observers are about inflation and the lower consumer spending resulting from it—and the drop in oil demand that goes hand in hand with those. It is still early hours, if not days, so the most immediate effect has been on stocks, bonds, and commodities, where this pessimism has been reflected clearly. What happens next is anyone’s guess, but retaliation may well be a part of it. “Governments will look weak if they don’t hit back”, the chief strategist of Pictet Asset Management, Luca Paolini, told the Financial Times, only to add that these governments will probably be open to negotiations, too.
